PROGRAMS & SERVICES
At Valley Humane Society, we consider ourselves advocates for both pets and people-understanding that they share an integral relationship. Our programs serve to enrich that bond, and are focused in four areas:
Adoption
Education
People With Pets
Community Collaboration
ADOPTION
PET ADOPTION
Our goal is to find a permanent home for each dog and cat in our care. We start by using our knowledge of the animal's individual needs and personality to make the best possible match with a new family. Then we stick around to provide support and counseling during your pet's transition to its new home. Click here to view our currently available animals.
ANIMAL INTAKE
At Valley Humane Society we strive to save as many lives as possible. In order to do so we accept animals from a mixure of sources. We prioritize rescuing animals in imminent risk of euthanasia from other rescue groups and our local County shelter. We are the only no-kill facility in the Tri-Valley region offering any private owner surrender of pets. All private surrender requests will be screened and we reserve the right to deny these requests based on certain circumstances. Acceptance of surrendered pets depends on available space, animal's age, health & socialization. All owner surrendered animals will be placed on a 4-6 month waiting list. Once our wait list gets to a point of extreme length we will close it in order to fairly communicate our abilities to the public. At Valley Humane Society we reserve 10% of our kennel space & foster homes for geriatric & special needs animals. Once the 10% is filled we can not accept anymore animals of this description until a spot becomes available. Following these guidelines helps us to maximize our life saving capabilities.

EDUCATION
KEELER'S KIDS
Bring Valley Humane Society straight to your classroom! Keeler's Kids is a one-hour humane education lesson for second and third-graders emphasizing the value of companion animals and the level of commitment required to own a pet. Children learn about pet adoption and discuss the implications of caring for an animal throughout its life. Each child is assigned a plush pet, complete with profile, which they can choose to "adopt" at the end of the lesson.
CRITTER CAMP
Join us in August for Critter Camp, a week-long day camp for kids age nine to twelve. Compassion toward animals and conscientious pet guardianship are the curriculum at this fun summer camp! Combining hands-on experience caring for a shelter cat with behind-the-scenes visits to veterinary offices, working ranches, and other local animal venues, Critter Camp teaches children about the responsibility and rewards that accompany pet ownership.
PRIVATE PRESENTATIONS
Let us share our passion with you! A Valley Humane Society representative will visit your group, club, or business gathering with a tailored address about our organization's mission, programs, and services, including opportunities for partnership and volunteer service. Available to groups of ten or more.

PEOPLE WITH PETS
PET THERAPY
The relationship between pets and people has immeasurable value on our emotional and physical health. Through Pet Therapy, Valley Humane Society brings animals to places other pets can't go: hospitals, rehabilitation units, senior housing, long-term care facilities. We bring the joy of companionship and unconditional love to combat the effects of loneliness and isolation often experienced by individuals in these environments. Our dog & owner volunteer teams provide therapeutic pet visitations all over the Tri-Valley region; please contact us for a list of sites or to suggest a new location.
ANIMEALS
Operated from our own pet food pantry, AniMeals provides regular free meals for the dogs and cats of seniors and low-income families. Helping to care for the family pet is just one of the ways we're working toward our goal of keeping pets in their own homes. Supplied by a grant from Petco Corporation, the pantry includes pet-related items such as litter, treats, and toys.
JACKIE BARNETT'S JUST LIKE NEW FUND
Routine veterinary care is expensive enough, but what happens when your pet suffers a debilitating illness or accident? Jackie Barnett's Just Like New Fund exists to help cover one-time emergency costs so your pet doesn't have to be euthanized simply because you can't afford the bill. Rescued animals that are sick or injured also qualify for assistance through the fund. The Animal Lover's Boutique, which features unique animal-themed gifts for people and animals, raises money for the JLN Fund. The boutique is located year-round in the lobby of Feline Medical Center, 3160 Santa Rita Road in Pleasanton. It is open weekdays from 8 am to 6 pm; closed 12:30 to 1:30 pm for lunch. Monetary donations to the JLN Fund are always appreciated. JLN Fund volunteers also make catnip pillows filled with potent homegrown catnip. The toys are sold for $2.50 each at the following Tri-Valley locations: Pleasanton -- Alisal Pet Clinic, Feline Medical Center and Valley Humane Society; Dublin -- Tri-Valley Animal Emergency Center and VetCare; Livermore -- Altamont Cat Hospital and Livermore Veterinary Hospital; and San Ramon -- Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital.

PAWS TO READ
Operated by local Public Libraries including Pleasanton, Livermore and Danville, Paws to Read brings Valley Humane Society Pet Therapy dog/owner teams into a library setting to promote literacy and a love of animals in children age five to twelve. By providing a safe, happy experience with animals, Paws to Read encourages children to improve their reading skills in a non-judgmental environment.
HOPE HOSPICE
We have a partnership with Hope Hospice, whose goal is to provide quality, end-of-life care for patients. Valley Humane Society contributes in three ways. First, we offer guidance and support to hospice staff, volunteers, and clients regarding various pet issues. Then, barring an alternate housing arrangement, we may accept the animal into our adoption program to eliminate a patient's anxiety over the future of his or her pet. Lastly, we provide volunteers to care for the pet in-home when the patient becomes unable to do so himself. This service is only available to clients of Hope Hospice.
DAISEY'S GIFT OF LIFE
A special donation of pet resuscitation kits by Valley Humane Society to fire districts in Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, the San Ramon Valley, and portions of Alameda County. Known as Daisey's Gift of Life, a variety of specially shaped masks allow firefighters to deliver life-saving oxygen to pets suffering from smoke inhalation.
